Home Gardening For More Than A Hobby, But For A Better Life

Gardening, be it for shrubs, trees, flowers, or vegetables, can be a very relaxing and rewarding activity. The smell of the dirt under our fingers as you plant seeds and pull up weeds, the thrill of the watching the tiny plants start to come up, and the pleasure you take in the results of your efforts, all make gardening an affordable and pleasurable past time. here’s a few useful pointers.

There is no wrong way to build a garden, but there are some ways that end up looking better. You should look through some gardening magazines to find great ideas as well as flowers and plants that look good together. There are also many great ideas on websites throughout the internet.

Find out if the plants you have in your garden have special fertilizer needs. Some plants like slow-release fertilizers, while others prefer nitrogen-rich foods. Most like to be fertilized during the high point of their growing season. A little education will go a long way to improving your garden.

Planting a bare-root rose. Bare-root roses are best planted at the beginning of their dormant period to lessen the shock of transplanting. If the roots look dry, soak them in a bucket of water for a few hours before planting. Remove diseased or damaged stems, and trim any thick roots by a third. Place the rose in a freshly dug hole, spreading out the roots and checking that the bud union is slightly above ground level. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly.

Invest in a good pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands while working outdoors. Whether you are working with plants with thorns or with fertilizer, gloves can protect your skin from damage from both plants and chemicals. They also do a great job at protecting your hands from dirt or sap stains and make cleanup much easier.

If you need to hard prune, cut those trees back in the fall. Make sure it is late enough in the season that no new growth will occur. Pruning in a timely manner helps to keep your trees strong and healthy. It prevents over growth too, which means your trees are more attractive.

When you have an abundance of seeds from your garden, a helpful way to store them away without drying them out is to use old, nylon stockings as a storage bag. After you add the seeds to the stocking, simply tie a knot at the top and hang the stockings in a warm, dark place to store until spring.

Make a handy twine dispenser from old clay pots. To always have gardening twine ready to use, take an old clay pot, and place it in your garden where you want your twine dispenser to be. Then place your ball of twine in it, and turn a second clay pot upside down. Thread the twine through the drainage hole of the upside down pot and place it on top of the bottom pot. You now have a handy dispenser!

Water new plants daily or every other day. When you first start plants in new soil, you need to tend to them very carefully. Plants experience a shock when they are in a new environment. Making sure they have enough water will go far in giving them the best chance to thrive in your garden.

A great tip to consider when gardening is that you need to keep your compost pile somewhat damp. This is important to keep on top of because with the right moisture conditions you will allow all of the materials to break down quickly and also keep it from smelling awful.

Make a profit off of the garden by selling micro crops. There is a huge demand for micro crops from restaurants and organic markets who are willing to pay a premium for these fresh vegetables. Specialty mushrooms, baby corn, rare herbs and other micro crops are in very high demand, and can earn a gardener upwards of fifty dollars a pound or more.

When growing plants indoors it is important to make sure that the pots have good drainage holes. If the pots do not drain it could cause your plants to drown when you are watering them. It is possible to find pots with great drainage holes for affordable prices if you take the time to do some comparison shopping at the end of summer.

To make sure you’re getting a level edge when pruning your bushes, use a piece of rope or a line. Simply fasten the rope to two pieces at the approximate height you’d like the bush to be at. Seeing the bush along this straight line will make it easy to see if it’s level at a glance.

Use your used pantyhose in two beneficial ways for gardening. Wrapping and knotting up old soap slivers in pantyhose allows you to scrub stubborn ground in dirt off your hands, without needing expensive garden soaps. You can also use pantyhose to bag up your squashes and melons as they grow to give them more support on the vine, and the sun can still get through hosiery.

Add some earthworms into your garden soil. Earthworms are great in tunneling and loosening up the soil, giving the roots of your plants plenty of air space. They help make soil that is rich in nutrients by breaking down dead plant materials. Earthworms are a much better solution for your garden than commercial fertilizers.

Grow from seeds. In garden centers, it is usually much cheaper to purchase a packet of seeds than to buy the equivalent number of grown plants. Remember, if you sow some seeds before the summer, you can get a garden full of bright, colorful flowers for a very cheap price.

Gardening is a pastime that really gives back. It brings benefits to ourselves, to our family, and to our planet. So, turn your thoughts to outside, and to the pleasure to be had by tending our own piece of the earth, and work on that garden!

Motivate yourself to get up at least 30 minutes earlier each day to do some exercise before leaving for work. Exercising before work will actually help you to have a better day, or certainly feel better as exercise releases the body’s natural endorphins.

Get Yourself Some Stylish Rattan Garden Furniture To Relax On This Summer

I think it is fair to say that there are only a very few items that consumers would purchase if they did not have a least a small amount of visual appeal to them. These are the items that are very much function over form.
We don’t really care what does into our television to make it work but we sure care what it looks like. That said billions of dollars are spent on packaging of these products because research shows that much of our shopping habits are based on looks even when they shouldn’t be.

Furniture on the other hand has a double purpose of form and function and is therefore definitely reliant on its looks as well as its comfort or functionality. However often you can see many items of furniture being sold based on looks alone with comfort being of little importance if at all. This certainly seems to be the case with rattan furniture where people are purchasing off websites without ever testing the function or comfort of the piece. We have some high fashion pieces of furniture which are sold solely for their look at one end of the spectrum. Alongside large, comfortable, big cushioned rattan day beds, which are great for whiling away the day, at the other end of the spectrum.

Thanks to its flexible approach to the manufacturing process the rattan furniture industry has benefited greatly. Rattan manufacturers are always watching current shifts in trends of more conventional furniture like sofas so as to be able to reproduce these in rattan.
As rattan is very flexible you can change from curves to straight lines with ease. The great thing with rattan is it can be manufactured in any style or design you wish. You can make truly unique pieces from it just as easily as you can make traditional ones.
So in conclusion I would say that it is not just the style of rattan furniture that has lead to its success but more because of the flexibility of design that has lead to its success.

Make A Wonderful Garden With These Suggested Tips!

For many people, gardening is more than just a hobby. Garden is one of the most relaxing and rewarding parts of their daily lives. Gardening can yield not just beautiful flowers and delicious fruits and vegetables, but less stress and tension as well! Read on for interesting and practical information, on how to get the most out of your gardening pleasure!

A great organic spray that will help discourage pests in your garden is by mixing garlic, onion or chives and mix with water to create a spray. To make the spray, just chop peeled garlic, onions or chives very fine and mix ½ cup of water with it and strain.

A garden that has tall plants in the back with low-growing plants in the front shows off the entire flower bed the best. To keep interest and color in your garden throughout the season, be sure to plant flowers that come into bloom at different times. This way, you will always enjoy color in your garden.

Use mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and prevent the growth of weeds. You can buy mulch, but you can create your own by using grass clippings or leaves. You can even lay down plastic sheeting and plant your plants in holes in the plastic. All these methods help the plants retain the moisture they need for growth and reduce the chances that weeds will grow.

Consider the benefits of indoor gardening especially in the long winter months. Plants inside of the home can actually add decor to your environment as well as add moisture and oxygen to your indoor air. You don’t have to add a lot of plants inside of your home to truly be able to make a difference, a few plants are more than enough.

You should check your gardening tools on a regular basis to make sure that they are still in good condition. Sheers, pruners and lawn mower blades all become dull after many uses. You can easily sharpen the blades yourself or have a professional sharpen them. By sharpening the blades you will not have to replace the tools altogether.

Have you ever seen a white powdery substance on your plant foliage? This is a powdery mildew that is most common in zones that have cool nights and warm days or in areas that are over-crowded with plants in humid locations. A common method to rid your plants of this mildew is by applying sulfur to the plant. Sulfur comes in a variety of forms, but a common form is powder.

Find out what USDA Zone you live in so you can pick the proper plants for growing in your area. Make a diagram of what you intend to plant and take time choosing the right spot for your garden. A little planning beforehand will save you time, money, and frustration.

If you are new to gardening, start with plants that are natural to your area. Natural plants will be easier to grow. They will thrive in the natural soil of your area, and appreciate the weather conditions you are faced with too. Ask for information on native plants at your home and garden center.

Use as few chemicals as possible in your garden to grow the healthiest foods. Any chemicals that you apply to control weeds or insects are bound to get into the plants that are growing. Try using as many natural methods of weed and insect control as possible to limit the possibility that chemicals will wind up in your food.

Keep a garden journal. The more information you collect about your site, your plants, and successes or failures in the garden, the less likely you are to make costly mistakes in the future. Although there are many resources to guide you, the most important resource is your own experience. Always be sure to record important information, like the name and variety of the plant, the date it was planted, and where in the garden it is located.

Give your garden a boost with instant color. If your garden is looking a little dull, a quick trip to your local nursery will do the trick. There, you will find colorful annuals and perennials in full flower, waiting to be planted into the ground, a window box or a hanging basket. This is especially handy if you are entertaining, and you need to brighten up the yard, or if you are trying to sell your house. Spots of color help to make a home look inviting and cheery.

When lifting heavy things in your garden it is important to protect your back. You should always lift with your knees when you are lifting anything in the garden. If something is very heavy you should ask someone to help you lift it so that you do not cause damage to your back or knees.

Try planting a ‘one-color’ garden bed. While this takes quite a bit of work, due to the limitations of the color palette, it can create a very striking visual. The emphasis is placed more on shape and structure, and it is especially helpful in a small garden, as it makes the area appear much larger. Remember that ‘one-color’ doesn’t mean a single shade. Use all shades in the color palette. For example a blue garden can feature flowers in shades of blue, purple and mauve.

Experiment with different shades of green. Many people think that if they don’t have a lot of flowers, they don’t have enough color in their garden. This couldn’t be further from the truth. A garden is filled with many different shades of green, and it can be argued that it is the most important color in the garden, as it provides the backdrop. Mix warm shades of green with cool shades. Use variegated plants as much as possible. Concentrate on shape and texture, as well as color.

Also, by adding natural garden furniture you will be able to enjoy your garden all the more. Many gardens now have room for garden sofa sets which can be located on patios or paved areas.

Given how busy and stressed out life can be, it’s a wonder that more people do not take up gardening. As you have just read, there are many ways of making it easier and more cost effective and even, more fun. Hopefully, this article has planted a few seeds in your mind about how to be a better gardener, today!
